Nagano, Japan, November 4, 2011 - Germany saw off Korea in their opening match of the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup on Friday, but coach Giovanni Guidetti is keen to focus on his team's next battle.
Germany coach Giovanni Guidetti: I’d like to congratulate the Kenya team because I think it’s a pleasure to see the spirit of this team celebrating every point and always fighting. We have something to learn from this team because they played with such a good spirit. I’m happy with the win. We were good in our serve, which is normally our key point, but our block only started to work midway through the second set and our attack can be better. But I was happy to see a good atmosphere in my team and I’m looking forward to our next match.
(Re. return of Angelina Grun): Angelina was always with us until she decided to stop for beach volleyball and then wasn’t with us for two years. She trained for four weeks and came with us for the European Championship and did really well. She’s a very important player for us, very experienced and very powerful. In two years without Angelina, all our young players improved a lot and now they’re playing well together, so I’m very happy with that.
(Re. Korea game): The last time we played was in the Grand Prix and we lost 3-1. Korea play really good and tomorrow will be an important match. Korea are a very strong team and have one extraordinary player in No. 10 (Kim Yeon-Koung), who is one of the best in the world. It will be a difficult match tomorrow, but I believe we can play better than in the Grand Prix.
Germany captain Margareta Kozuch: I’m happy we could start with a victory and we did well in service, especially in the third set. I look forward to playing well tomorrow.
(Target): It’s important for all the teams to qualify for the Olympics. It’s a really difficult tournament because everyone must play a lot of matches, so we have to be able to focus on each match every day.
(Re. Korea game): I think Korea are a really good team with good serving, so it will be important to do well on reception and to serve well.
Kenya coach Paul Bitok: I’d like to congratulate Germany for their win. Germany are a good team and we knew they would be stronger than us. We went in to see if we could get a set off them, but they contained us when we put pressure on them. In the third set, we couldn’t receive and lost concentration as the Germans served very strong. Player No. 7 (Angelina Grun) had a very good jump serve that destroyed our game in the final set. My players showed that they are able but need more experience.
(Re. Brazil game): Brazil is one of the top teams and what we are trying to do is to use these matches to build our confidence. We have played Brazil before and our matches are always good. We will correct our mistakes in training and see if we can win some sets tomorrow.
Kenya captain Brackcides Khadambi: It was a good match for us against Germany, one of the top teams in the world. We learned a lot from them.
(Target in the World Cup): Our target is to qualify for the Olympics. Every team wants to qualify for the Olympics, but to qualify you must put in more effort and we must improve our reception and attack.
(Re. Brazil game): They’re a really good team and we will prepare as we did today, with a lot of confidence and set ourselves to play well. I just hope we will improve the things we did badly today and tomorrow we’ll do those things better.
