Tokyo, Japan, November 18, 2011 - Serbia easily disposed of Algeria in straight sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) on the final day of the fourth-round in the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup 2011 at Tokyo Metropolitan Gym on Friday.
The victory means Serbia completes the tournament with a 5-6 win-loss record, while Algeria finish with at 1-10. Serbia outblocked the defeated side 9-2 and also outserved them 8-3 in a dominating performance.
Nadja Ninkovic and Ana Bjelica paced Serbia in the victory, scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively while Stefana Veljkovic contributed 12. Ninkovic's effort included four blocks and Bjelica was named the most impressive player of the match. Faiza Sabet was the high scorer for Algeria in the defeat with 14 points.
Serbia led 8-6 at the first TTO in the opening set as Bjelica, the second high scorer for the team in the competition, notched three early points.
The Serbs boosted their advantage to 16-11 at the second TTO. A spike by Ninkovic completed a nice play and made it 20-13 for Serbia.
Serbia then took the set 25-19 on an Algerian error as Bjelica top-scored with six points, while Sabet also scored six for the Algerians.
Algeria, which has won only two sets during the World Cup, briefly went ahead 6-5 in the second set, but Serbia quickly ran off three straight points to lead 8-5 at the first TTO.
Serbia's front line then proved too powerful for Algeria, which tried valiantly to dig spike after spike, but found the task very difficult.
The second TTO saw Serbia in front 16-11 as Bjelica and Ninkovic continued to lead the way with strong play.
A nice block from Ninkovic closed out the second set for Serbia 25-14.
Stefana Veljkovic put Serbia ahead 7-3 in the final set with a powerful spike and they led 8-3 at the first TTO before Bjelica delivered another strong blast over the net as Serbia powered to a 16-9 edge at the second TTO.
Algeria took a time out with Serbia leading 21-14 and responded with a nice spike from Aichia Mezemate, but it only held off the inevitable.
The Serbs closed out the match 25-18 on a serve by Bojana Zivkovic.
