FIVB - Women's Volleyball World Cup 2011

Germany edge Serbia in five-set thriller

Germany edged Serbia in five thrilling sets at Toyama City Gymnasium on Tuesday to improve its record to 3-1 at the FIVB World Cup

Toyama, Japan, November 8, 2011 – Germany took revenge for their defeat by Serbia in the final of the European Championship with a 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11) win in the FIVB World Cup at Toyama City Gymnasium on Tuesday.

German setter Kathleen Weiss took the Most Impressive Player award. Germany’s top scorers were Margareta Kozuch and Angelina Grun with 22 points apiece. Maren Brinker added 18 while Corina Ssushke-Voigt and Christiane Furst charted 13 and 12 respectively.
Milena Rasic top-scored for Serbia with 23 points while Ana Bjelica added 19. Other Serbian players with double digits were Jovana Vesovic (13), Natasa Krsmanovic (10) and Tijana Malesevic (10). Germany outblocked Serbia 13-8 and outserved them 6-3.

A couple of early tipovers by Milena Rasic helped give Serbia an early advantage, but there was little to choose between the two teams, and a service ace by Maren Brinker brought the scores level at 6-6. In the second phase, both teams raised their game and there was usually no more than a point between them. Serbia coach Zoran Terzic called the game’s first timeout when his team fell behind by two points for the first time – at 18-16 – and they were soon level again. Terzic got vocal with his team when they were duped by an Angelina Grun tipover and he called them off court when they fell two points behind again at 20-18. Germany finally pulled away for good when Christiane Furst sent a blast down the middle to make the score 22-21. Corina Ssuschke-Voigt followed up with a cracking block on Natasa Krsmanovic and a spike that brought setpoint. Margareta Kozuch then put Germany 1-0 up with a rocket from the right.

Jovana Vesovic came up with three kills to help Serbia lead 8-4 at the first technical timeout of the second set and the margin was the same at the second TTO. Three points on the trot from Brizitka Molnar saw Serbia’s lead stretch to 19-12 – her progress only interrupted by two German timeouts – before a netted serve by Krsmanovic initiated a German revival. Kozuch and Grun scored a couple of points each as the Germans leveled at 19. Terzic brought on Jovana Brakocevic – who is recovering from an injury – for her first appearance in the World Cup and Serbia regained the lead, with Germany struggling stop Rasic’s attacks down the middle. But the scores were all square again at 23 and 24 before Ana Bjelica sent a shot from deep through the German defence. Kerstin Tzscherlich then failed to handle a serve by Vesovic and the two teams were level at 1-1.

German errors allowed Serbia to take a three-point lead at the beginning of the third set, but the scores were level at 9-9 after two massive blows by Kozuch and a great block by Furst on Tijana Malesevic. Germany took the lead in the set for the first time at 13-12 after a great first-time tipover by setter Kathleen Weiss and they went two points ahead at the second TTO on a shot down the middle from Brinker. Serbia kept leveling the scores but at 18-18 Germany pulled away and opened up a three-point gap after a good block by Brinker and a Serbian error. Back came Serbia and they went ahead 23-22 when Brinker sent a shot long. Then Ssuschke-Voigt took control with a spike that leveled the scores, a brilliant block on Malesevic that brought setpoint and a big, big drive that sealed the set.

After Serbia took an early lead in Set 4, three errors by Vesovic allowed Germany to pull level at 7-7. There were errors on both sides, as well as some big-hitting and good defence and the scores stayed tight. Serbia were two points ahead at the second TTO after two good hits by Vesovic and three up after a block on Kozuch by Malesevic. They earned three setpoints when Vesovic made a big block on Ssuschke-Voigt. Germany pulled back two, but a great save by Silvija Popovic set up the winner for Bjelica and the match headed for a fifth set.

Serbia’s two early serving errors were offset by two German receiving mistakes and the scores were tied at 5-5. But three errors by Vesovic – a long spike and two receiving mistakes –allowed Germany to open up a three-point gap at 8-5. Both teams defended tenaciously but Serbia couldn’t do enough to get past the Germans. Ssuschke-Voigt brought up setpoint at 14-11 with a strong hit and a block on Bjelica by the same player sealed the victory for Germany.
