Team profile
Korea’s playing style has always been characterized by quick combination play and mental resilience, but in the last few years the team has been trying to add power and height to match the trend in an effort to reverse a number of poor results. They finished eighth at the FIVB World Cup 2007, fourth in the 2007 Asian Championship, fifth in the 2006 Asian Games and 13th at the FIVB World Championship 2006. Most disappointingly, the team failed to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
On the plus side, the team was second at the inaugural AVC Cup in 2008. In 2009, they finished 12th in the FIVB World Grand Prix and fourth at the Asian Women's Championship. However, in 2010, the team improved, finishing 13th at the FIVB World Championship and second at the Asian Games.
During the FIVB World Grand Prix 2011, Korea found they could match higher-ranked teams, defeating Germany and topping the second round of matches in Poland before narrowly missing out on a spot in the Finals. At the Asian Women's Championship, they again impressed, finishing third, which was enough to qualify for the FIVB World Cup since hosts Japan finished second.
Coach profile
Kim Hyung-Sil has a wealth of experience coaching club teams, as well as junior and senior women’s national teams. He was assistant coach of the Korea women’s team from 1981 to 1984 – during which time they finished third in the 1982 Asian Games and fifth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games – before again taking on the position for a short stint in 1991. He went on to coach the team from 1997 to 1998 and won silver at the 1998 Asian Games. He was reappointed to the post in 2005.
