Team profile
China come into the FIVB World Cup 2011 with what can be described as a mixed bag of results in recent years with success at FIVB events particularly hard to find. Their best ever results have been a fourth at the six-team World Grand Champions Cup in 1997 and fifth place finishes at the 2008 Olympics and at the 1977 and 1981 World Cup, a tournament they return to after finishing 10th in 2003.
After a poor display at the FIVB Men’s World Championship 2010 where they finished 19th, they showed positive signs of a turnaround at the Asian Men’s Championship where they finished second to Iran after a four-set loss in the final and will be hoping it is the start of improved performances globally. Their FIVB World Cup history has not been pretty after those first two encouraging results, with a ninth and a 11th to show for their 1995 and 1999 campaigns respectively.
China have fared better in the Asian Games. They won the competition in 1990, placed second in 1994, won in 1998, finished third in 2002 and second in 2006. In the Asian Championship, they placed third in 1991, fourth in 1993 and second in 1995, before winning the title in 1997 and retaining it in 1999. Now one waits again to see if China can take the excellent continental form onto the world stage.
Coach profile
Zhou Jianan was previously a setter for the China men's national team from 1987-1999 and has been a coach since 1999. He started at Sichuan before becoming China coach in 2006. His first decision was to select a young side for the Beijing 2008 Olympics which paid off brilliantly with a fifth place finish. Knowing he has a mandate until London 2012, Zhou is looking to build a squad which will take China places it has never been before, onto the podium at an FIVB event.
