Cristofani still optimistic after first win

Laura Partenio (receiving) and Alessia Gennari (6) were the top scorers for Italy against Mexico

Tijuana, Mexico, October 7, 2013 – Italy’s coach Luca Cristofani is still optimistic about the chances of his team to make the final-four phase of the tournament and considered last night victory over Mexico as the first step in that process.

Alessia Gennari, captain of Italy: I am happy because we needed to win badly and now we have a second chance in this tournament. Mexico is a very good team and they battled hard.

Alejandra Perales, captain of Mexico: It was a tough match. Italy team has a good blocking and fast attacks. We did our best but couldn’t defend properly. We have learned a lot from playing against very strong teams.

Luca Cristofani, coach of Italy: Mexico has the best serve of all the teams we have faced. We played well and gave our best. Our tallest player (Valentina) Diouf didn’t play due to a slight knee injury. It’s the first step in a long road and I hope we can play better tomorrow.

Francisco Pineda, coach of Mexico: We played very well for moments and maintained the same level of Italy. But we were not able to keep the leads. Italy is a very tall and disciplined team.
