Japan win five-set duel with Dominican Republic

Japan recovered from a 1-2 deficit to defeat Dominican Republic on Monday

Tijuana, Mexico, October 7, 2013 – Japan outdueled Dominican Republic in five sets (15-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 15-9) to take possession of first place in Pool A of the FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship on Monday.

The fast offence of the Japanese side and their accurate serves were keys for the victory as they were able neutralized the power of the Dominican side. The winners gave away 25 points via unforced errors to 30 by the opponents. 

Yurie Nabeya and Saori Takahashi were the main offensive weapons for Japan with 20 and 14 points, respectively.

Jeoselyna Rodriguez and Yonkaira Peña led the defeated side with 20 and 19 points, respectively, while Candida Arias and Brayelin Martinez contributed 13 and 10 in the losing effort.

Dominican Republic recovered from a slow start and went to an 8-5 margin at the first technical time out. They increased to 16-9 behind the blocking and attack from Marianne Fersola and Yonkaira Peña. The one-sided first set closed at 25-15.

Two aces by Nozomi Ito helped Japan to an 8-7 lead. The fourth ace by Ito kept the one-point difference at the second stop. Sarina Koga attacked down the middle for a two-point lead at 20-18 and Japan maintained the difference for a 25-22 score in the second set.

The towering Brayelin Martinez scored with three spikes and Candida Arias landed two down the middle for an 8-5 Dominican lead in the third set. They increased to 16-12 at the second time-out behind strong spikes by Martinez and Arias. The third set finished 25-17 with blocks by Arias and Martinez against Miku Benoki and Fumika Moriya.

Japan took an 8-7 advantage with Yurie Nabeya making the difference with spike and ace to compensate the offence by Dominican Jeoselyna Rodriguez.  Saori Takahashi scored around two opponent errors for a 10-7 score.  Takahashi continued to pound as Japan led 12-9 and the Dominicans had difficult in their serve-reception.  The Asian side was in front 16-11 at the second pause and went on to take the fourth set 25-17.

Japan led 8-6 behind Miku Benoki and Haruyo Shimamura. The Dominicans shortened the distance to 10-9 behind Rodriguez and Peña but Japan came back to win 15-9.
