Dominican Republic breeze past Turkey for second win

The Dominicans scored via 15 blocks in their victory over Turkey in straight sets on Sunday

Tijuana, Mexico, October 6, 2013 – Dominican Republic cruised to a straight set (25-18, 25-16, 25-21) victory over Turkey earning in the process their second victory in as many days in Pool A of the FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship on Sunday.

Jeoselyna Rodriguez had an outstanding overall performance finishing with 15 points in leading the balanced offence of the winners thanks to solid performance by setter Camil Dominguez. Rodriguez had seven aces to go with two blocks and six spikes.

Brayelin Martinez and Yonkaira Peña contributed 13 and 12 points to the victory, while Candida Arias chipped in with 8 tallies.

Ceren Kestirengoz was the only Turkish player that reached the double digit mark in the scoring charts with a match-high 16 points.

The Dominican Republic held a huge 9-1 margin in the aces category and overwhelmed the opposition 15-6 in the blocking area with the stocky Dominguez leading her side with five blocks.

Dominican Republic jumped into an 8-3 lead behind three aces by Jeoselyna Rodriguez. Turkey came back to close within three points at 15-12 with Ezgi Guc and Dicle Babat as the main producers. Guc’s serve sailed long for the 16-12 score. The Dominicans dominated the rest of the way with Rodriguez scoring two more aces. The first set finished 25-18 with a cross-court shot by Brayelin Martinez.

The Dominicans came from behind in the early stages of the second set to take an 8-7 lead. The block by Rodriguez against Ezgi Dagdelener earned the Caribbean side a two-point lead at the second pause. It was a one-way second set the rest of the way with setter Camil Dominguez scoring with two blocks and Yonkaira Peña closing up with one ace.

In the third set, Martinez scored with a tip for the 8-7 advantage in favor of Dominican Republic. Ceren Kestirengoz and Cansu Cetin narrowed the gap to 15-13 but Rodriguez emerged from the right side to score with a cross court shot. Cetin landed a subtle tip but Martinez answered back with a similar dink. Rodriguez closed the third set 25-21 with a right side parallel cannon-shot.
