Tijuana, Mexico, October 1, 2013 – FIVB Control Committee President Cristobal Marte met with FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship Open organisers on Tuesday, on the eve of the start of the tournament on Saturday in the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico.
Mr Marte, also the FIVB 1st Executive Vice President and NORCECA Confederation President, received updates on the different logistical areas of the tournament organisation for
the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali from the Local Organising Committee represented by
Saul Castro Verdugo, the director of the Institute of Sport and Physical Culture of
Baja California, and members responsible forthe different areas.
At the meeting Marte Hoffiz commended the organisers for their “clear vision in terms of organisation and development,” saying, “A big part of the NORCECA Confederation growth is thanks to Mexico."
As part of the agenda to modernise the sport of volleyball, the FIVB will test 21 points per set at the FIVB Under 23 World Championships Open. The rule change has been implemented in order to make volleyball more appealing for fans both on site and on television. The rule will see the sets played to 21 instead of the customary 25 points. The team which first scores 21 points, with a minimum lead of two points, wins the set (except the deciding fifth set, which remains unchanged).
A press conference is
scheduled for Wednesday with some of the competing teams that have already
arrived in Mexico.
China, Dominican Republic, Argentina and Italy are the four national teams currently holding a training camp at the Baja California High Performance Center, while Mexico, the host team is holding its training camp in the city of Monterrey.
The Women’s U23 World Championship Open, which continues until October 12, is in its inaugural year and it was fitting that Mexico was chosen as the venue given their excellent track record of holding such high-level international events.
This will be the fifth FIVB age-group World Championship event to be played in the country after the Boys’ and Girls’ U19 and U18 World Championships in 2007, the Women’s U20 World Championship in 2009 and the Boys’ U19 World Championship that was held earlier this year.
