U23 Women's World Championship expects high performance at high performance venue

The Baja California High Performance Centre in Tijuana hosted the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship earlier this year

Baja California, México, September 27 2013 - Ten years after setting the first stone in place to build the Baja California High Performance Centre, the impressive venue in Tijuana, Mexico will host its fifth FIVB Age Group World Championship next month when the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship Open begins in Tijuana and Mexicalli on October 5.

The “CAR” (initials for Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Spanish) was the official competition venue for the FIVB Volleyball Youth World Championships in both genders, male and female in 2007, the same year this facility was completely inaugurated and was officially certified by the Mexican Olympic Committee.

After the certification, the High Performance Centre acquired the status of alternate training centre to receive national and international delegations of several sports, like it happened in 2009, when Baja California hosted the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship.

In 2013 the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship also took place at the High Performance Centre as well as at Mexicali State Auditorium. Now both venues are ready to receive the teams that will compete at the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship Open, which will be memorable for many reasons, not least the test of a couple of rule changes, namely 21 points per set.

In its first decade the High Performance Centre has registered a variety of events, from volleyball and beach volleyball to the Diving World Series, a Taekwondo World Championship and the Youth Olympic Qualification Tournament in volleyball to the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, 2010 as well as the International Grand Prix of Archery.

The High Performance Centre has certified and official areas to practice more than 30 sports in a 11, 108 square meters extension. A total of 6,300 square meters of construction were designated for the Multipurpose Gym where volleyball matches usually take part.

The Baja California Government invested approximately $30m in developing a state of the art complex that also has a positive impact to benefit the communities of Tijuana and surrounding cities.

The Baja California Sports and Physical Culture Institute, a Ministry that manages this facility, has developed a solid partnership with the Mexican Volleyball Federation as well as the NORCECA Volleyball Confederation, the Panamerican Volleyball Union and has received the full support of the FIVB after the visit of Lifetime Honorary President Jizhong Wei in 2012.

The highest attendance level for a volleyball match registered at this venue was in 2007, when Turkey and China played for the gold medal at the FIVB Volleyball Girls Youth World Championship with a total of 4,800 persons, most of them representing the Chinese community of Tijuana and Mexicali.

Also the Iranian community from Southern California crossed the border later that same year for the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship finals a couple of weeks later. Iran won the Crown in another sold out match against China.

For the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship Open, hosts Mexico, Japan, Italy, the Dominican Republic, Turkey and Argentina will play at the High Performance Centre as part of Pool A.

Mexicali is the other city that has also played a special role in the success of volleyball tournaments in this part of Mexico by hosting Pan American Cups and World Championships in different categories and both genders.

In 2007 the State Auditorium was remodelled before the Age Group World Championships. This venue has a special air conditioning system that allows teams to practice and play in world class competitions despite the high temperatures of a city located in the middle of a desert valley.

The State Auditorium is located inside the Sports City a Complex build within an area that was part of the Old Mexicali Airport and that also has a baseball stadium as well as the headquarters of the Baja California Sports Ministry.

In 2009 the State Auditorium hosted the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U20 World Championship that was won by Germany and now this venue will receive the teams that will play in Pool B such as Brazil, USA, China, Germany, Kenya and Cuba.

The State Auditorium has an attendance capacity of 4,400 persons.
