Xu Jiande has long been involved in volleyball. He began
at Chinese club Zhejiang in 1978 as a player before moving into coaching in
1989, winning the China Men’s Volleyball League in his very first year. From 1997 to 2010, Xu was coach of the
Zhejiang Club women’s team and helped the team to the runners-up spot in the
league.
Xu was subsequently invited to coach the national junior women's
team and clinched the bronze medal in the 2011 FIVB Junior Women's World
Championship in Peru. He led the team to the top of podium in the 2012 Asian
Junior Women's Championship and the gold medal in the 2013 FIVB Junior Women's
World Championship in the Czech Republic.
