Candida Arias of Dominican Republic spikes through the Mexican block in their match of Wednesday at Baja California High Performance Center

Tijuana, Mexico, October 9, 2013 – The Dominican Republic clinched the top place in Pool A of the FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship Open following a straight-set (25-15, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Mexico on Wednesday.

With a 4-1 win-loss record that included four victories y 3-0 or 3-1 score and one 2-3 defeat, the Dominicans collected 13 points, one point better than Japan, winners of their five matches, including three by 3-2 scores, valid for two points.

In Friday’s semifinals they will meet their NORCECA rivals United States while Japan will play against China in a battle between teams from the Asian Confederation.

Brayelin Martonez and Jeoselyna Rodriguez finished with 16 and 11 points, respectively, leading the offence of the winners. Erasma Moreno came off the bench and scored all her seven points in the third set. Andrea Rangel had 14 points for the defeated side.

The Dominicans held an 8-3 margin in the aces department and topped the opponents 7-2 in the charts of service winners.
Dominican Republic dominated the one-side first set with their usual serve-and-block game. They jumped to an 8-1 lead and then slowed down a little allowing Mexico to close to 16-9 at the second TTO. They finished strong winning five points in a row for a 25-15 score. Brayelin Martinez led the charge with 7 points.

Candida Arias scored two aces to carry Dominican Republic to an 8-4 advantage. Gema Leon capped an exciting rally to close the distance to 9-8 and Rios tied at 9-all. A pair of Mexican unforced errors gave the Dominicans the two-point lead.  Leon landed two aces and two opponent errors sent Mexico to a 16-14 advantage. The Dominicans came back with the duo of Jeoselyna Rodriguez and Yonkaira Peña to take the set 25-21.

The Dominicans led 8-6 and 16-13 in the third set. Erasma Moreno came off the bench to score seven points in the set won by the Caribbean squad 25-21.
