Germany beat Cuba and get into the top 8

Germany finished the Pool Round with a 2-3 record and are still in contention for places 5-8. Cuba closed with 1-4 and finish their participation at the tournament.

Mexicali, Mexico, October 9 2013.- Germany beat Cuba in straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-20) and clinched a berth in the classification round for places 5 to 8 at FIVB Womens U23 World Championship.

Carina Aullenbrock led the German team with 11 points, while Leonie Schwertmann, Jennifer Geerties and Katharina Schwabe scored 9 apiece. On the Cuban side, captain Daymara Lescay closed with 9 points and Alena Rojas with 8.

The Germans had an 8-4 advantage in team aces. Both teams were tied in block kills and points surrendered by unforced errors.

First two sets were very tight, with a three points difference.

Cuba tried to recover but had some defensive problems. Also in some spikes, the Caribbean team struggled and put the ball outside.

Germany’s captain Jennifer Geerties returned to the court after recovering from an ankle injury. However, coach Jens Tietbohl had to apply more changes in the lineup.

Libero Anna Pogany could not play due to an illness and was substituted by Alisha Ossowski, who originally plays as Outside Hitter. The changes gave result, along with a solid serving performance.

For Tietbohl things worked very well as Ossowski kept a good surveilance of German territory. The 5-11 (1.80 meters) outside hitter, was tested at a world championship in defensive skills and in the end she excelled in 10 attempts, five more than Cuban libero Emily Borrell.

Ossowski was very well supported by another Outside Hiteer, Katharina Schwabe, who digged 6 balls, the same as Daymara Lescay. The Cuban captain was forced to work in more defensive plays ans rescued six balls.

German defense had 25 successfull attempts against 18 by Cuba.

The European's setter Denisse Imodu was also very effective in preparing balls for attack after Germany closed with a 33-26 ballance in points by spike. Jennifer Geerties returned also had a positive impact in reception, after She had 11 successfull plays.
