Turkey still in contention for semifinal berth

Turkey's Nur Babat contributed to the victory over Mexico in four sets on Tuesday

Tijuana, Mexico, October 8, 2013 – Turkey collected three important points to stay in contention for the semifinal round in defeating Mexico 3-1 (25-7, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19) in a match of Pool A at the Baja California High Performance Center on Tuesday night.

Turkey plays against Japan on Wednesday with the chance to enter among the four finalists with a victory against the undefeated Asian team.

Gozde Yilmaz and Nur Yurtdagulen topped Turkey with 15 and 11 points, respectively, while Cansu Cetin added 10. Turkey registered 9 serving aces with Yilmaz and Cetin leading the way with 4 and 3, respectively.

Alejandra Isiordia and Andrea Rangel finished the match with 15 and 13 points for Mexico, a team that gave away 31 points via unforced errors.

Turkey completely dominated Mexico in the first set with 8-3 and 16-3 leads at the two technical time-outs of the first set. The opening frame closed 25-7. Turkey collected five points in aces -four by Gozde Yilmaz- and five via blocks. Ozge Yurtdagulen led the scorers with 6 points followed by Yilmaz and Nur Babat with 5 and four, respectively.

Turkey took the lead 8-3 only to see Mexico coming back to tie and going ahead 14-11 behind the serves of Alejandra Perales. The home side rested on a 16-13 score at the second time-out. Mexico stayed out of reach the rest of the way despite a couple of threat from Turkey. The set concluded 25-22 with a terrific spike by Alejandra Isiordia.

Turkey recovered from their sloppy play in the second set to lead 8-3 and 16-11 at the technical time-outs of the third chapter. They did it establishing a good defensive game at the net blocking and touching most of the opponents’ attacks. Turkey took the set 25-18 with a cross court spike from the right side by Yilmaz.

Isiordia recorded two aces to go with one spike as Mexico took an 8-7 lead in the fourth set. Turkey took the lead 16-15 at the second stop when Ezgi Guc broke a 15-all tie with one ace. Cansu Cetin put Turkey on the path to the victory with two straight aces for a 22-18 difference. The third set finished 25-19.
