Martinez and Rodriguez lead Dominican Victory over Italy


Dominican setter Camil Dominguez made a solid contribution to the victory over Italy with an excellent selection for the attacks

Tijuana, Mexico, October 8, 2013 – Brayelin Martinez and Jeoselyna Rodriguez each collected 22 points in leading the Dominican Republic to a convincing 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-12) victory over Italy at Baja California High Performance Center on Tuesday.

It was the third victory against one loss for the Dominican Republic good for second place in Pool A with 10 points.

After a very close battle for the first two sets, the Dominicans played text-book volleyball the rest of the way displaying a festival of serves and blocks.

Rodriguez, the leading server of the tournament with 14 aces coming into the match, added four more to her tally to go with two blocks.

Anna Nicoletti was the top scorer for Italy with 18 points followed by Laura Partenio and Cristina Chirichella with 11 apiece.

The Dominican side held the advantage in blocks 16-13 and in aces 6-3 while leading also in attacks 51-43.

Two blocks by Yonkaira Peña against Anna Nicoletti and Cristina Chirichella gave the Dominican Republic an 8-5 lead. Italy tied at 8-all with consecutive blocks by Chirichella and Gennari off Marianne Fersola and Peña. Two aces by Nicoletti broke a tied score at 11-all and Italy was 16-12 in front at the second stop. Dominguez and Peña combined spike and block with an opponent error to close the distance to 16-15. A wild attack by Alessi tied the score at 16-all. Chirichella and Partenio combined spikes for 19-17 in favor of Italy. The Italians held off a late surge by their opponents to take the set 25-23.

Italy led 8-3 at the first technical time-out. The Dominicans climbed back to within one-point at 11-10 when Fersola blocked Raphaela Folie. One ace by Jeoselyna Rodriguez tied up at 14-14. The Partenio answered back with a solid hit and the attack by Rodriguez from the back court sailed long. Italy led 16-14 at the second stop. The Dominicans came back to take a 22-21 lead following ace by Dominguez and the block by Fersola off Gennari. At 24-23, Rodriguez scored for the set 25-23.

The Dominican Republic stormed into an 8-1 lead in the third set with outstanding blocking. The second stop found the Dominicans in front by a comfortable 16-7 distance relying on the attacks by Brayelin Martinez. Led by Partenio, Italy won five of the next six points but the Dominicans recovered on time to claim the third set 25-16 when the serve by Gennari sailed long.

Italy called for time out after trailing 3-0 in the fourth set. Rodriguez and Peña scored with spikes and Candida Arias blocked Partenio for the good start. One ace by Rodriguez sent the Caribbean side to an 8-2 advantage. The score was a one-sided 16-6 at the second stop with the Dominicans playing text-book against an Italian team that appeared to run out of gas. The fourth set closed at 25-12.
