Japan defeats Mexico with strong defense at Women's U23

Japan's setter Kanami Tashiro executed well in the distribution of her team's attack

Tijuana, Mexico, October 5, 2013 – Japan relied on excellent defensive tactics and well-located serves to claim a four-set victory against Mexico at the Baja California High Performance Center on Saturday.

Kanami Tashiro, captain of Japan: "First we wanted to serve well and then play good defence. We slowly caught rhythm and controlled the pace of the match but we need to improve in both aspects for tomorrow’s match."

Alejandra Perales, captain of Mexico: "Japan is a very fast team with outstanding defence. We managed to score good points against them but we didn’t have an aggressive service game and failed in our reception."

Shigekazu Okubo, coach of Japan: "It was a tough match and the girls were a little bit nervous with the noisy crowd. I think that winning the first set led to the victory in the second. Mexico’s attack was very strong and we had to make an extra effort to stop them."

Francisco Pineda, coach of Mexico: "I think the team stopped doing the things we were doing well. We fell into a long period of desperation due to the defence showed by Japan.  Also they made key serves against out outside players to neutralize our offence."
