Turkey score dramatic victory over Italy

Turkey's Asli Kalac celebrates after scoring the winning point of the dramatic victory over Italy in five sets

Tijuana, Mexico, October 5, 2013 – Turkey scored a dramatic come from behind five set victory over Italy (29-31, 16-25, 26-24, 25-22, 17-15) in the first match of Pool A at the Baja California High Performance Center on Saturday.

Ceren Kestirengoz and Ezgi Guc finished with 23 and 19 points, respectively, to lead the scoring charts fo the winning side while Gozde Yilmaz and Asli Kalac added 16 and 12.

Valentine Diouf had a match-high 28 points for Italy while Alessia Gennari and Laura Partenio each totaled 16 points. Cristina Chirichella and Raphaela Folie tallied 12 and 10, respectively.

Both teams scored with 10 aces but Turkey held a 14-8 advantage in blocks with Kalac and Guc registering three apiece.

Led by the strong spikes of the towering Diouf, Italy team was in front 8-5 and 16-12 at the technical time-outs of the first set. Turkey cut the distance to 20-19 with an ace by Ezgi Dilik and the spike by Gozde Yilmaz and then evened up at 21 with the spike by Ezgi Guc. A long battle went on with Italy finally taking the set 31-29 with one ace by Laura Partenio,

Behind solid serves, Italy took an 8-3 advantage in the second set. The Italians increased the distance to 11-5 forcing a time-out by Turkey. The duo of Diouf and Partenio continued to produce consistently with Ceren Kestirengoz as the main Turkish weapon. Cristina Chirichela closed it at 25-16 with a powerful parallel shot down the right.

The third set saw the Turkish side taking a 6-1 advantage with Guc serving. The Italians climbed back to take a slight lead at 16-15. The attacks by Guc kept Turkey in the game. Diouf broke a tie at 22-all with a shot that landed on the back line and scored again to set match point at 24-22. Yilmaz answered back and Turkey tied up following an opponent error. Yilmaz attacke again and Turkey took the set 26-24 when Alessia Gennari’s attack sailed long.

Turkey led 8-7 at the first stop of the fourth set. Folie and Gennari gave Italy a one-point lead at 14-13 and Diouf parlayed ace and spike for a 16-13 advantage. Turkey came back on the shoulders to equalize at 16-all with consecutive blocks by Cansu Cetin and Guc. At 19-all, Guc and Cetin scored via spike and ace and Turkey tied the match a two sets apiece when Diouf missed with her spike for 25-22.

Diouf gave Italy a three-point lead in the tie-breaker at 7-4 combining spike and ace. Teams traded sides with Italy in front 8-5 after another bomb by Diouf. Turkey cut the distance to 12-11 with the spike by Yilmaz followed by a wide attack by Diouf. Gennari responded with a clean shot from the left side and Turkey called for time trailing 13-11. Diouf scored off the Turkish block for match-point. Cetin blocked Diouf to tie at 14-all and then Turkey claimed the victory with consecutive spikes by Yilmaz and Kalac to win the tie-breaker 17-15.
