Twelve countries are set to compete to divide in two pools of six teams each, with Italy and Turkey starting the competition for Pool A, and USA taking on Kenya in Pool B, both matches at 15:00 local time.

Organizers Mexico are seeded at the head of Pool A, while the remaining 11 countries are seeded according to the FIVB Senior World Rankings, which were last updated following the 2013 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.

Pool A consists of Mexico, Japan, Italy, Dominican Republic, Turkey and Argentina. Pool B is composed of Brazil, USA, China, Germany, Kenya and Cuba.

According to the world ranking, Germany replaced Algeria who withdrew from the competition, after Russia and Serbia turned down the opportunity to participate.

Along with Italy and Turkey, Dominican Republic v Argentina and Mexico v Japan will also play on the first say of competition for Pool A. Japan v Italy, Turkey v Dominican Republic and Mexico v Argentina will compete on the second day. On Oct. 7, Argentina will fave Turkey, Japan v Dominican Republic and Mexico v Italy. The fourth day of competition will see Argentina v Japan, Dominican Republic v Italy, and Mexico v Turkey. On the final day, Italy will play Argentina, Turkey v Japan and Mexico v Dominican Republic.

The semifinals and play-offs will begin October 11.

Seeking ways to modernise the sport of volleyball, the FIVB will also be testing two rules during the FIVB Volleyball U23 World Championships Open. The two rules being tested will see A) sets played to 21 points instead of the customary 25 and B) an interval of 15 seconds between the referee’s whistle and the serve.

To win a set (except the deciding fifth set, which remains unchanged) is won by the team which first scores 21 points with a minimum lead of two points. In the case of a 20-20 tie, play is continued until a two-point lead is achieved.
