Iran take fifth place with Venezuela victory

Reza Ghara finished the tournament as Iran's top scorer with 89 points

Uberlandia, Brazil, October 13, 2013 - Iran won the 5th-6th place play-off at the Men's U23 World Championship with a 3-0 (21-14, 23-21, 21-17) victory against Venezuela on the last day of comeptition at the Arena Presidente Tancredo Neves.

The match was a repeat of the teams' final pool B match when Iran also claimed a 3-0 win.

Iran took the first set 21-14 with points coming from all over the team. Venezuela's total of nine error points, especially on serve points, stopped them pressurising Iran, and opposite Reza Ghara closed the opening set with a spike.

Despite a good start to the second set by Iran, the defence of middle blocker Jonathan Quijada helped Venezuela get back even and then hold a slight 12-11 advantage at the technical timeout. With a reduction in their error count,

Venezuela posed a greater threat to Iran, but wing spiker Mojtaba Mirzajanpour was difficult to contain over the closing points as Iran took the set 23-21.

Captain Kervin Martin Pinerua Urbina took his tournament total of points to 100 at the start of the third set as Venezuela took a small lead, but they couldn't hold on to it as Iran eased ahead after the technical break, with Ghara's blocking and attacking both important in securing the set 21-17.

Ghara finished as the match's top scorer with 16 which took his tournament total to 89 to make him Iran's biggest contributor of points. Pinerua Urbina scored 13 for Venezuela which took his tournament total to 105, just behind Argentina's Pablo Kukartsev (109) as the competition's leading scorer.
