Venezuela hold off Australia to record first win

Venezuela had to hold off Australia's challenge to claim their first victory

Uberlandia, Brazil, October 8, 2013 - Venezuela claimed their first victory at the Men's U23 World Championship with a 3-1 win (21-15, 21-13, 28-30, 21-19) against Australia on day three at the Arena Presidente Tancredo Neves.

Setter Carlos Paez controlled his attackers well as Venezuela won the first set 21-15, with four players accumulating three or more points, led by middle blocker Emerson Rodriguez with five.

Rodriguez was also prominent in the second set, assisted by Jonathan Quijada, shutting out Australian attacks and providing blocking points for Venezuela who turned a 12-10 lead at the technical timeout into a 21-13 set win.

The third set was the longest of the competition so far, with Australia eventually winning it 30-28 to force the match into a fourth set. Both teams failed to take various set points before a pair of spiking errors from Venezuela captain Kervin Martin Pinerua Urbina handed Australia the set.

Venezuela got ahead at the start of the fourth set and held on for their first victory as Australia put pressure on them towards the end. Captain Pinerua Urbina (15) led his team's scoring, but was one of four Venezuela players in double figures.

For Australia, left-arm opposite Lincoln Alexander Williams was again his team's main points threat and doubled his tournament points total with 24 as the match's top scorer.

Day four of competition is the penultimate round of pool matches with Venezuela looking for a second win against Mexico, while Australia will be first on court up against unbeaten Russia.
