Gaber Abdelaty Abouzeid, 59, played for the
Egyptian national team from 1972 to 1984, competing in a number of top
tournaments, including the World Championship, Olympic Games, the World Cup and
the African Championship, which Egypt won in 1976.
He became a coach in 1985, starting with the
youth team at the Zamalek club. He moved on to become coach of Amal in Saudi
Arabia and Alaain in the United Arab Emirates with whom he won three national
titles. He returned to head the youth coaching at Zamalek and was technical
director of the club from 1995 to 2006 during which time they won three
championships, were Arab champions twice and African champions once. After
three years as head of volleyball at Zamalek, he joined Smoha before becoming
head coach of Egypt’s junior men’s team in 2012.
