Serbia claim 9th place with spectacular victory against Japan

Serbian's Aleksandar Okolic and Mihajlo Stankovic blocking Japan's Takahiko Imamura in the 9th place match in Izmir

Izmir, Turkey, September 1, 2013 – Serbia held off a relentless Japan to claim ninth place in the FIVB Men's U21 World Championship with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21,25-23) victory at Ataturk Hall in Izmir, Turkey on Sunday.

Coming to the competition as big contenders for the title, Serbia finished in a disappointing 9th place, while Japan closed at the 10th.

In their second participation under the name of Serbia, the European powerhouses returned back 5 position than the fourth they gained in 2011.

Japan close their 11th participation in the 10th position, 2 positions better than 2011.

Uros Kovacevic was the main offensive threat for Japan with 16 points followed by Mihajlo Stankovic and Drazen Luburic both with 14 respectively. Takahiko Imamura led Japanese scorers with 9 points followed by Naoya Takano 8.

After Serbia went easily through winning the first and second sets, Japan came strongly in the third set with a lot of motivations as they wanted to achieve a surprise, but the Serbians returned back to their rhythm to win the third set narrowly 25-23.
