Serbian fightback quells USA resistance

USA Benjamin Patch spikes against Serbian Mihajlo Stankovic and Aleksandar Okolic in the classification match at Men's U21 World championship

Izmir, Turkey, August 31, 2013 – Serbia regained their starting rhythm on time to claim 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 26-24) victory over struggling USA team in the classification 9 to 12th positions of the FIVB Men's U21 World Championship at Ataturk Hall in Izmir, Turkey on Saturday.

Now Serbia qualified to play for 9th and 10th positions, while USA relegated to play for 11th and 12th positions.

Serbia's attacker Drazen Luburic led his team scorers with 17 points followed by Milan Katic who scored 14 points. As usual USA's opposite attacker Benjamin Patch led his team and match scorers with 26 points.

As USA started the match in a better mental income they could lead with a comfortable margin in the first set, until the Serbia came back quickly to win the first set 26-24.

Serbia claimed the second set easier with the aid of Drazen Luburic and Milan Katic to make a 2-0 lead for the Serbian team. USA came back with their opposite spiker Benjamin Patch at his best performance and helping his team to get back after winning the third set to improve the score to 1-2.

US team motivations made them re enter the match using their consistency in blocking and backline defence, while the Serbian goal was to avoid the tiebreaker, so the match went with a near point deficit until Serbia hardly won the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
