FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

"We won by the service pressure," says Canada coach

Canada's captain Milan Nikic and coach David Gordon Preston speaks with young writers

Canada coach David Preston:

We applied some service pressure tonight. However we did some mistakes. One thing we did very well tonight was we passed the ball well and our offence was available. Once that going in their way, we got our confidence back. It is very tough for athletes being on this side of a draw. Everybody has dreams before coming to the World Championship. This was the first match that we realized we didn't have that chance. So it is very difficult as emotionally to attached their selves to this game. Mexico is such a good team.

Canada captain Milan Nikic:

We are very happy to win. We have seen Mexico before and they are a good team also. We had some problems about finding our rhythm in first two sets. I think once we figured out what kind of  mistakes we were doing, our service pressure got better. Then we got much more consistent. That's how we got the victory.

Mexico coach Jorge Lopez:

We hope that time passes, not only in the remaining schedule of this event but also for next years. The good lapses we had during the games will be longer for 3,4,5 sets so that we can finish games. We have great moments that we can face any team in the world and be close to the trophy. But what keeps us down is our own mistakes. We know every team here are strong and we are improving ourselves to make less mistakes which can lead us to win any game.

Mexico team captain Jonathan Ponce:

With Canada we had a very good game. In several moments in the game, we didn’t know how to finish strong. We made many consecutive errors. It was complicated for us to finish while getting closer to the end. We will get ourselves concentrated for the next match. And we will keep fighting so that we can get the best place we can get.
