FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

The championship starts now - captain Gungor

The Mexican side congratulated Turkey for being one of the top teams in the world

Ankara, Turkey, August 28, 2013 – Turkey are happy about defeating Mexico by 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18) and making to the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship, but they do realise that the hard matches are still ahead of them.  These are the first words of the two teams’ coaches and captains after the match.

Jorge Lopez, coach of Mexico: “First, I want to congratulate the Turkish team and wish them good luck in the next round. I believe that Turkey are now one of the top teams in the world. And we still sometimes need to work more on the basics. We have made a lot of technical mistakes. But for us it is great to be in this round and to play with Turkey. We will keep fighting in our next matches.”

Jonathan Ponce, captain of Mexico: “I congratulate Turkey and think they are a good team. We made many mistakes and we did not have our best attack today, while Turkey had great blocking on their part what helped them to win. We tried harder in the end of the match but it was a bit late to change the result. We will work more to be more successful in our next games.”

Umit Hizal, coach of Turkey: “It was an easier match than we expected. But it was a very important match that opens the doors to quarterfinals. I am glad that we succeeded in opening that door. My players are aware of everything that they need to do on the court. They continue the battle...”

Baturalp Burak Gungor, captain of Turkey: “I think the championship starts now. Our opponents will be really tough and strong in the following matches. I am happy that we managed to make it to the quarterfinals. I hope we will make it to the final.”
