FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

Mental preparation for this match was hard for my players – coach Nafarzadeh

The Iranians are happy to be the first team to secure their place in the quarterfinals

Ankara, Turkey, August 28, 2013 – Egypt took some extra risks and therefore made too many mistakes, while the hardest part for Iran was the mental preparation for the match, according to the winning side of the round of 16 match Iran v Egypt 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-11) at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara.  These are the statements of coaches and captains after the game.

Gaber Abouzeid, coach of Egypt: “Today we played well, especially in the first and the second sets. Our main problem is the loser spirit that we have once we lose in one or two sets like it was against Iran. Iran are a good team and they play first-class volleyball, probably on the same level as Russia or Brazil. I think they will go to the last round while for now we cannot do anything. We will play for the 9th place and we will just wait to find out who our opponents will be. And we hope to be better maybe for the next championship.”

Islam Abdelkader, captain of Egypt: “Iran are a very good team. We knew that from the first day. All teams were going to the hall to watch how Iran play. They are one of the best teams and we are sure they will play in the final four. They have not lost any games and they have a good system of playing.”

Farhad Nafarzadeh, coach of Iran: “It was a very hard match for us because we finished our pool in the first place and Egypt were the fourth of their pool. It was hard for me to make my players mentally ready for the match. They were relaxed. It created some pressure on us in the beginning of the match. Egypt started with a different team and tactic for the match today. We had difficulty in the beginning of the first set, but we improved our game step by step. I congratulate my players for their good play and being the first team in the quarterfinals.”

Javad Hosseinabadi, captain of Iran: “Egypt are a good team. As we were the winners of our pool, I think they started the match today with extra concentration. They took extra risks in the game and it pushed them to make more mistakes. So, it became an easy match for us later and we won by 3-0.”
