Today is our day - captain Ponce

Coach Jorge Lopez and captain Jonathan Ponce are happy after the victory over Estonia

Ankara, Turkey, August 24, 2013 – ”We played against a very strong team and have to congratulate them for this good match, but today is our day,” Mexico’s captain Jonathan Ponce said after his team defeated Estonia by 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 29-27) at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Turkey.  These are all post-match statements of the coaches and the captains.

Urmas Tali, coach of Estonia: “We started the match very nervous. The first set was fifty-fifty and the second set we had too many problems. The third one was a little better, but we just had so many not good reasons to make mistakes. We lost this match by 1-3, and it was a very important match for us. From the start we could have very different attacks, but we were defeated psychically rather than technically.”

Ronald Jarv, captain of Estonia: “We started today’s game badly and we lacked focus through the first two sets. However, we did quite well in the third set and it gave us confidence. So the game was quite dramatic for us. Unfortunately our setter made several bad decisions. But we still have one game ahead of us and we will see what we can do then.”

Jorge Lopez, coach of Mexico: “This was a very important match for us. This is the first match that we won in the World Championship in this age group.  Our senior team won the match against Argentina yesterday. They are going to play with Brazil today. I hope our win will be a motivation for them. We practised a lot for this match. My team did everything we practised before. We need to start working for our next match now.”

Jonathan Ponce, captain of Mexico: “We are playing together with my team-mates for many years. We are like brothers. We played against a very strong team and have to congratulate them for this good match. But today is our day. We did everything on the court and we are happy.”
