Pianborno, Italy, August 17, 2013 – The national teams of Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Japan took part in a friendly tournament in preparation for the Men’s Under 21 World Championship scheduled to take place in Turkey from August 22 to September 1.

The matches, which started on August 14, were organised in the Italian cities of Borno, Costa Volpino, Darfo Boario Terme and Castione della Presolana. The three day tournament was organised in a round-robin format with medal matches taking place on the final day of the competition.

The first match between Japan and Argentina on the first day of competition in Borno ended in a tie-breaker, with Japan eventually claiming a 3-2 (18-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12) victory. Newcomer to the Argentinian team, opposite Pablo Kukartsev, scored 35 points for his side. In the second match of the day, Italy defeated Brazil 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 17-25, 25-19, 15-11).

In Costa Volpino the following day, Argentina faced fellow South American rival, Brazil. While Brazil took the match with a score of 3-1 (25-16, 27-25, 25-19, 27-25) the top scorer was Argentine player Gonzalo Quiroga with 19 points. Hosts Italy then beat Japan in the second match of the day with a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23).

The host team had reason to celebrate once again when they beat Argentina on the third day of competition with a final score of 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12). Quiroga was again the top scorer for Argentina with 19 points followed by Kukartsev with 17. Brazil won the last match of the third day, when they beat Japan 3-0.

Argentina took the bronze medal on the final day of competition after they beat Japan 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 26-24). Hosts Italy missed out on a gold medal after they were beaten by Brazil 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-12).

The Men’s Under 21 World Championship will take place in the cities of Ankara and Izmir. The tournament provides a platform for the next generation of stars to showcase their skills on the international stage and potentially take the big step into the giant world of the senior ranks.

The competition features a revised format having been expanded from 16 to 20 teams, made up of the hosts and 19 qualifiers.

Russia are the defending champions after their success in Brazil in 2011, their eighth in 11 appearances in the competition.
