FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

Russia performed at a superior level

Russian players lift their coach Alexander Karikov into the air during the celebration that erupted immediately after winning the gold medal

Tijuana, Mexico, July 7, 2013 – Russia played phenomenal volleyball for the last two sets of their encounter against China for the gold medal of the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship and cruised to a well deserved victory.

The opponent coach Ju Genyin was quick to admit that his team didn’t have a chance to overcome the big obstacle represented by Russia.

Victor Poletaev, captain of Russia: “Team China has very fast combinations and this morning we practiced to correct all the six positions. The only way to stop their game was with very strong serves to create difficulties to start their offense. We succeeded and I am very happy for this victory.”

Yu Yaochen, captain of China: “Congratulations to Russia, a very strong team. Their heavy serves put a lot of pressure on us. We were not able to organize our game and I am not satisfied with our performance tonight. Russia was a very tough opponent and deserved to win the title. Now we have to continue training hard to improve our game.”

Alexander Karikov, coach of Russia: “When I arrived in Mexico fourteen days ago I had in my mind that the final match would be against China, so I was mentally prepared for it. The reason for that thinking was the minimal mistakes this team makes. I talked to my players about the need to produce strong serves and organize the block. When we lost the second set I told them to remember our plan and that the only way to win against China was with our serves. Then we started to serve better and better.”

Yu Genyin, coach of China:
“My team did not have a chance to win tonight against a team performing at the high level Russia did. No chance for us. Technically all their players were at a superior level and you can’t play against that. I have to congratulate Russia and their players, especially number 4 (Victor Poletaev) and number 11, the setter (Pavel Pankov).”
