Mexico brings good luck charm to Polish Czaja

The bronze medal brought back good memories to Poland's coach Wieslaw Czaja

Tijuana, Mexico, July 7, 2013 – Mexico has reserved Poland’s Wieslaw Czaja very happy moments in his volleyball career both as a player and as a coach.

The coach of the Polish team that won the bronze medal on Sunday with a masterful piece of volleyball against Iran also won a gold medal in Mexico City back in 1974 when he was playing for the men’s national team of Poland.

“Mexico is a good country for me, because as a player I won a gold medal almost 40 years ago, and now I win this bronze medal as a coach in another world championship,” recalled Czaja during the post game press conference.

Wieslaw Czaja, coach of Poland: “I am very happy with this victory against a strong team like Iran. Starting from the second set we reduced our errors and our attack improved and we were able to recover mentally from the loss to China the day before. Coming to Mexico has become something special to me. Mexico is a good country for me, because as a player I won a gold medal almost 40 years ago, and now I win this bronze medal as a coach in another world championship.”

Iraj Mozaffari, coach of Iran:
“Poland is a different team to the others because they have the skills and are very tall also. They won the match starting with their serves and continuing with their blocking. To me number 6 (Pawel Gryc) is their best player. I had my setter injured and it was a problem for us. Now it is important to continue working with the new youth team and this group that will move to the junior class for the Asian Championships and the next World Championships.”

Bartosz Bucko, captain of Poland: “We didn’t play our best volleyball in the first set but then we recovered and played very well. It is good for us to win the bronze medal. Bartlomiej Lemanski came in and played very well and our game moved up into a higher level.”

Mohammadjavad Manavinezhad, captain of Iran: “Poland played very well and we didn’t. The tournament is over and we have to start training again for other competitions. Congratulations to Poland for a well deserved victory.”
