Mexican Lopez praises efforts of WADA and FIVB in favor of clean sport

Mexico's Mauricio Lopez pay attention to the instructions given by Dr. Hector Lozada of the FIVB Medical Commission

Tijuana, Mexico, July 6, 2013 – Mauricio Lopez, the captain of Mexico, was one of the players who took part in the “Outreach Program” developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency in cooperation with the International Volleyball Federation during the FIVB Boys’U19 World Championship.

Lopez took the e-quiz especially formulated for this occasion and praised the policy of FIVB to keep volleyball as a clean sport free of prohibited drugs.

“Many players have commented on this initiative adopted by WADA and FIVB to preserve the health of the players and the integrity of our sport,” Lopez said. “I am pretty sure it will be very valuable in our future and we thank both institutions for the joint efforts to the best interest of the athletes.”

The World Anti-Doping Agency, in conjunction with FIVB, has conducted a three-day educational and prevention program during the world championship held the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico.

The purpose of the activity is to solidify the efforts of both organizations to have the sports free of substances to enhance the performance of the athletes and thus promoting the fair play.

Dr. Hector Lozada, a member of the Medical Commission of FIVB, supervised the program focused in assisting the athletes to learn more about the banned supplements and the risks of its use.

More than 50 athletes and staff members of the twenty teams participating in the world championship received first-hand information in the form of fliers distributed through the attaches of the different teams.

Players took an e-quiz at the desks located in the dining room of the athletes’ hotel and at the main entrance of the gymnasium of the High Performance Center.

“At these age-group world championships we emphasize on providing the necessary tools and knowledge to our players,” Dr. Lozada explained. “We do not conduct any anti-doping tests but on the contrary we make players aware of the danger and consequences of the use of banned substances and look to educate them.”
