Licea improves record against USA

Cristopher Nugent of USA spikes, while Mexicans Ariel Acosta and Sebastian Castro try to block the ball.

Mexicali, Mexico, July 6 2013 — After a losing strake of two matches in a row, luck for Mexican team changed.  One year after the Norceca Qualifier Mexico and USA played each other. Statistically Mexican coach Oscar Licea had one point in his favor: a winning record against American teams.

Licea improved it to 3 wins and 1 loss, since He faced USA U19 unit in 2011 at the Age Group Pan American Cup celebrated at Mexicali State Auditorium (He won on first round and lost the Bronze Medal match).

Thinks improved for Mexico at the FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship when facing their neighbors, in a heart beating match.

Oscar Licea, Coach of Mexico: “I want to congratulate my team. The boys showed their courage and when We felt things were difficult we raised up and they calmed down tactically. It was question of pride. I told them it’s our home we must do it.”

Collin McMillan, coach of USA: “It was a fun match. Playing against Mexico is always exciting. We were able to comeback on the second set. I think we began good in our transition and did what our attackers needed, but we missed that in the end.”

Mauricio Lopez, captain of Mexico: “I think that after all we were very hungry for a victory, we needed to win. It was a good match because of our rivals’ height and after two consecutive losses we went out to the court and decided to fight hard.”

Christian Blough, captain of USA: “Congratulations to Mexico. It was a great match, fun to play. After that comeback in the second set we played with a lot of energy but we had some mental lapses that costed in the result.”
