FIVB Volleyball Girls' U18 World Championship

Press release

The future is now

Mexican libero Fernando Forte celebrates a play during a match at the Baja California High Performance Center.

Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, July 2 2013 - Just a few days after the beginning of the FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship, fans have gotten the chance to see and meet players who could be part of the new generations of volleyball heroes.

Some of them are from countries that had to wait even decades to reappear in a world class competition, like Chile, whose most followed athlete in the U19 Unit is captain Dusan Bonacic.
Two years ago, Bonacic began a big preparation process along with his teammates by participating in international tournaments like the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, celebrated in Arizona.

Since them, players like Bonacic and setter Matias Banda, for example, have grown up physically and technically.

Some others like libero Rogerio Carvalho Filho, have been considered among the best in the continent in his position. Along with him there is Mexico's Fernando Forte, also a libero.

Both Rogerio and Forte were the two youngest athletes in this position at the U23 Pan American Cup played in 2013 in Langley, British Columbia, Canada, in 2012.

In the final designation for Best Libero, Rogerio finished in first place, but Forte, in his first international tournament, registered good statistics that positioned him just below the Brazilian athlete.

Despite United States' athletes regularly play at High School level in their country and live their first world competition experience, some names like Connor Lammey, Jacob Arnitz and Matthew Walsh, Jr. are a solid guarantee of success for American Volleyball in a not so far away future, like Brazilian coach Percy Oncken said about Team USA after first match between those two countries.

And when talking about teams from other continents, Turkey has shown good quality with Cansin Ogbai Enaboifo, Kaan Kusay Gulec and Yasin Aydin who surprised with 39 combined points against Cuba.

However, Cuba have recovered and qualified to second round. Youngsters like captain Ricardo Calvo, Osmani Uriarte, Luis Jimeno and Inovel Romero have demonstrated why, despite a 0-2 start in the first round, they are the Norceca Champions.

Captain Tsubasa Hisahara and Yuki Ishikawa have shown leadeship skills in the Japanese roster with their individual performance, while Korea's captain Dong-Geun Jeong and Egypt's Sheehabeldeen Mohamed and Eid Abouelsoud are solid promises for the sport in their countries.

The preparation for the tournament has been taken seriously for many teams, players of coaches. "I had the chance to play against other teams like Mexico on last march in Saquarema, and it was a great experience before a world championship," said Brazilian captain Fabio Rodrigues.

At the same time, Argentina, Poland, Russia and Mexico, the host country for this U19 World Championship, played the "Gorvachov" Cup at Volleygrad Complex in Anapa, Russia last month of May. For many youngsters this is just a stop of a long and amazing journey.
