Fatigue has effect on Belgium performance

Belgium's players showed the effects of a long match the night earlier against Mexico

Tijuana, Mexico, June 30, 2013 – Meeting one of the best teams in the world with just a few hours to recover after playing five sets in the last match of the previous night made things very complicated for a Belgium team that succumbed to Russia in the first match in Tijuana on Sunday.

Yu Yaochen, captain of China:
“We performed at a normal level, nothing extraordinary, and well organized. But our defense was not as good as we want. I hope we can do better”.

Lowie Stuer, captain of Belgium: “China is a very good organized team that uses a lot of combinations and has a good block. In two of the sets we stayed close until 20-18 or something but China played better at the end of the sets.”

Ju Genyin, coach of China: “Before the match I heard the regular setter of Belgium was injured and we wish him a speedy recovery. Today we won because the loss of their setter impacted their performance. We won but our players made many mistakes. It is their first major tournament and they need the experience.”

Steven Vanmedegael, coach of Belgium: “The absence of our setter made things complicated for us. We were also tired from playing five sets the night earlier and having only a few hours to recover and play against China was tough. We will see how far we can go in this tournament.

On the condition of setter Sander Depovere:
“His ankle is really swollen but not broken. Anyway he is definitely lost for the tournament. He won’t be back.”
