Belgium win over adversity

A cheering crowd supporting Mexico created initial stress to Belgium players they were able to overcome

Tijuana, Mexico, June 29, 2013 – Belgium cleared a few hurdles before collecting their second victory in Pool A of the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship on Saturday.

First they had to play against the home team supported by a noisy crowd, then lost the first two sets of the match and things got even worse when they lost their regular setter to an injured right ankle.

Against all the adversity they were able to score a comeback victory and improved to a 2-0 win-loss record and five points in Pool A.

Steve Vanmedegael, coach of Belgium: “Our team started with a lot of stress playing against Mexico and their supportive fans but after losing the first two sets, we could manage to do some adjustments and found solutions. We did a lot of changes and the second setter came in and did a excellent job. I have to congratulate all my players.”

Oscar Licea, coach of Mexico: “I only want to congratulate the team of Belgium for the victory. That’s all I have to say.”

Lowie Stuer, player of Belgium: “We made many defensive faults in the first two sets but we made some adjustments when the stress of playing against the home team went away and played better. After losing our regular setter it was like there is nothing to lose attitude and things changed for good.”

Mauricio Lopez, captain of Mexico:
“It was a great match. We won the first two sets and they made some adjustments and we could not find a solution. At the end we lacked the strong desire and fell short.”
