China beat Russia 3-0 to advance to semis with perfect record

Ting Zhu scored 30 points (!) and was the unimpeachable leader in the quarterfinal thriller China versus Russia.

Brno, Czech Republic, June 28, 2013 – Led by incredible wing spiker Ting Zhu (30 points!), China overpowered Russia in a three-set (25-21, 25-22, 26-24) quarterfinal thriller and thus extended their perfect run at 2013 FIVB Women’s U20 World Champs to a 6-0 match and 18-0 set record. It was an outstanding match between two top teams here in Brno, Czech Republic.

Ting Zhu from China scored 30 points and was the unimpeachable leader here in Vodova while Irina Voronkova obtained 16 points for Russia.

Megastar Ting Zhu smashed China to a hard-earned 25-21 in the first set. Zhu scored eight times in attack and two times on blocking. It was a wonderful match the two teams displayed. Amazing offensive combinations alternated with spectacular defense actions. Even though Russia played on a very high level, World No. 1 China were just too good today. After two sets, the Asians were up 25-21, 25-22. The team of coach Jiande Xu continued their run in the third and last set. Russia rallied until 24-24 but could not pull clear. The better risk management finally made the difference: Russia committed 15 mistakes, China 12. And for the rest China had Zhu.

China advance to Saturday’s semi-final crunch meeting with World No. 2 Brazil while Russia continue their Women’s U20 World Champs campaign with their duel against Serbia in the race for the fifth place.
