Qualification process complete for FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship

Russia, who won their fifth European Boys' Youth Championship title, will participate in this year's FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship in Mexico along with Poland, Belgium, Finland, Turkey and France

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 22, 2013 – While the curtain came down on the European Boys’ Youth Championship on Sunday, with Russia celebrating their fifth title, it also came down on the qualification process for the FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship in Mexico with all 20 vacancies now filled.

To most people’s surprise two-time defending champions Serbia could only manage an 11th-place finish at the European qualifier while Spain, runners up two years ago, didn’t even participate. It means bronze medallists Cuba are the only podium team to return to the FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship two years on.

From June 27 to July 7, 2013 the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali in the province of Baja California in Mexico will host the 13th edition of the FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship. It will be the second time Mexico have hosted the age-group tournament after Tijuana staged the event in 2007.

The tournament is held every two years though this is the first time the competition will feature 20 teams as all previous editions have featured 16 teams only. This year’s competition will run over 10 days with two rest days.

In total there were four vacancies for Asia and Africa, three for NORCECA and South America and six for Europe.

CAVB

At the 11th African Nations Championship – held from January 20 to 26, 2013 in Sétif (Algeria) – Egypt, Tunisia, Rwanda and Algeria secured the four slots available to the CAVB for the World Championships.

Egypt claimed the African Nations Championship title over Rwanda with a score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-22). It was the third straight victory for the country in the championship. Tunisia took the third place over hosts Algeria in a match that ended 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23).

AVC

Iran, China, Japan and Korea
took the four vacancies available to the AVC at the 9th Asian Youth Boys’ Championship that was held from October 24 to November 1, 2012 in Tehran (Iran).

Iran claimed their sixth title at the Asian  Youth Boys’ Volleyball Championship defeating rival China 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 23-25, 28-26, 15-8) at the final held at the Azadi Hall. Japan and Korea played a hard fought match for the bronze medal, which ended 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20, 15-10) for Japan.

This is the first time that Asia has four vacancies available to them for the World Championship.

CEV

Following the CEV Boys’ Youth European Championship held from April 12 to 21, 2013, Russia, Poland, Belgium, Finland, Turkey and France secured the six spots attributed to the CEV for the World Championship in Mexico.

Russia claimed their fifth gold medal in the European Championship with a 3-1 (16-25, 18-25, 25-22, 21-25) victory over rivals Poland in the final held in Laktasi in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Belgium narrowly beat Finland 3-2 in the bronze medal match of the competition while Turkey won against France 3-1 to take the fifth and sixth place of the match, respectively.

NORCECA

At the NORCECA Boys’ U19 Championship held from June 30 to July 8, 2012, Cuba and USA took the two remaining spots available to the Confederation for the World Championships. Mexico qualified automatically as host of the FIVB World Championship, claiming one of the NORCECA vacancies.

Cuba won the gold medal at the NORCECA Boys' U19 Championship after beating Mexico in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-14). USA edged out Puerto Rico in five sets (22-25, 25-19, 25-11, 26-28, 15-7) to win the bronze medal and the last NORCECA ticket to the 2013 FIVB Boys' U19 World Championship.

CSV

Brazil, Argentina and Chile secured their tickets to the World Championships in Mexico after winning the top three spots at the Boys’ Youth South American Championship in Santiago (Chile) held from November 7 to 11, 2012.

After two editions finishing behind Argentina, Brazil took back the podium at the South American Youth Boys’ Championship in an exciting match, which ended in a 3-1 victory (25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22). Chile, the host team, overcame Venezuela to win the bronze medal and the third South American berth at the world competition.

COMPETITION FORMULA
