Turkey pull off a magnificent come-from-behind victory over battling Greece

Turkey's Pelin Aroguz tries to overcome much taller blocker Anthi Vasilantonaki, 196cm tall

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 3, 2013 – Turkey survived a sturdy challenge from Greece to demolish the European counterparts in tense four-set battle 17-25 25-12 25-21 25-23 to go up against Italy in the 9th-10th playoff in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Saturday.

Turkey, the reigning champions which suffered a bitter 1-3 loss to Dominican Republic in the knock out second-round stage, struggled to hit their top form in the opener, allowing the Greeks several attacking opportunities. The 196cm-tall Anthi Vasilantonaki attacked fiercely at the net and scintillating blocking by Olga Strantzali and Ioanna Gkountimenko also lived up to head coach Dimitrios Floros’s expectation. Greece took the easy first set 25-17.

Going down 0-1, Turkey found their rhythm in the second set, mixing the offensive combination of Ada Germen and Humay Topaloglu from their devastating mid-court spikes and stuff blocks by Merve Cepri and PelinAroguz to give Turkey a comfortable second-set win 25-12.

The third and fourth sets became more thrilling when both sides entertained the spectators with their exceptional tactics. The leads changed hands for several times, before Turkey regrouped and started to produce the goods. Fromthen, despite a brave fight-back, Greece proved the Turkey’s mighty attacks too much to handle. Turkey continued their remarkable run to sweep both sets 25-21 25-23.

Humay Topaloglu led Turkey with 19 points including 16 kills from 33 attempts, with Anthi Vasilantonaki scoring a match-high 18 points for Greece.

Following the victory, Turkey now move up to take on Italy in the 9th-10th playoff, while the losers Greece will battle it out against Chinese Taipei for the 11th position.
