Tunisia finish 19th after a close rally past Algeria 3-1 in all-Africans battle

Tunisia's Nadia Mtaallah tries to dig a spike from Algeria

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 3, 2013 – Fast-improving Tunisia registered their first win and the last alike in the Girls’ U18 World Championship after outclassing old foes Algeria in their 17th-20th playoff on Saturday.

With a magnificent come-from-behind 20-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15 victory over Algeria, the similar 3-1 margin they had beaten the same rivals in last year’s African Youth Championship, Tunisia finished 19th place in this World Championship after collecting only three points from a single win over Algeria. The Algerians returned empty-handed to finish 20th overall.

Tunisia and Algeria were the only two teams which have yet won a match in the tournament. The Saturday’s encounter among them decided their rankings which team to finish 19th and 20th places respectively in this World Championship.

Algeria, which finished 16th at the previous edition with a total of 16 teams competing in Turkey, started well with good defence. Yasmine Abderrahim and Nihel Belhadj Kacem were the team’s major forces to attack aggressively at the net. Algeria took the opening set without much trouble 25-20.

Tunisia, powered by Emna Khalfa and Soulaima Messaoud, regrouped to bounce back with sharp attacks and efficient blockings to win the remaining three sets 25-16 25-22 25-15 for an eventual 3-1 victory and the 19th place.

Emna Khalfa topscored Tunisia with 15 points, 13 of them from devastating attacks, while Yasmine Abderrahim led Algeria with 19 points.
