Reigning champions Turkey prove their class above Thailand

Turkey celebrate their straight-set victory over hosts Thailand

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 2, 2013 – Title-holders and world No.4 Turkey silenced the noisy drum-beating home supporters with their exceptional form to brush aside Thailand in sensational straight-set 25-21 25-15 25-10 victory in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Friday.

Turkey, which captured the historic world title on home soil in 2011 following a fantastic final showdown triumph over China, could not go the distance this year when they fell victims 1-3 to Dominican Republic in the knock-out playoff second round to be relegated to the 9th-16th classification instead.

Turkey started strongly in the opening set. Powerful Hande Baladin, Pelin Aroguz and Ada Germen were the visitors’ key forces to thrash the small blockers with their thundering spikes. Though smaller in size, the Thai girls tried hard to counter-attack, but failed to make the grade. Turkey clinched the first set 25-21.

Conceding one set, Thailand tried hard to come back again. With home fans cheering lustily all the way, Jiraporn Chaymon tore the Turkey’s defence with her aggressive spikes. However, the Thai game became error-filled shortly, allowing the indomitable visitors attacking opportunities. Turkey captured the next two sets comfortably 25-15 25-10.

Pelin Aroguz emerged as the top scorer of Turkey with 16 points including 13 kills from 33 attempts, while Jiraporn Chaymon led Thailand with only nine points, all of them from devastating attacks hits.

With the bitter loss, Thailand are relegated to play in the 13rd-16th classification round, while the winners Turkey will be pitted in the 9th-12th playoffs.
