Powerhouses Italy struggle to beat gallant Egypt in straight sets

Egypt's Sarah Hanafy tries to attack the taller blockers

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, August 2, 2013 – Egypt put up a good fight against world No.3 Italy before going down in closely-contested straight-set battle 25-23 25-18 25-19 in their first 9th-16th classification match in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Friday.

Egypt, which registered one win in this championship following a convincing 3-0 win over Tunisia in their group stage, came much stronger this time. Rahma Almohandes overcame the taller blockers with her spectacular spikes, while a good combination between Aya Ahmed’s spikes and solid blockings from Doaa Abdelghany and Ahmed sparked Egypt to a 5-0 lead initially.

From then, Egypt put their acts together to foil Italy’s attacking opportunities and move ahead 22-17. Italy, powered by hard-attacking Anna Nicoletti and fast-spiker Sara Bonifacio, counter-attacked well to tie 23-23 before winning the hard-fought set 25-23.

Egypt still surprised the rivals in the second set to come up with good attacking and powerful jump serves. They led from the beginning 17-15. Italy gradually found their touch and hit back with great form to take the set 25-18.

The third set turned out to be the similar script as Egypt fought hard to lead initially before Italy exploited their greater experience to capture the set 25-19 and the match.

Elisa Zanette emerged as the top scorer of Italy with 14 points including 11 kills from 34 determined attempts. Rahma Almohandes led Egypt with eight points, all of them from the devastating attack hits.
