Unbeaten Poland struggle hard to beat Argentina in thrilling tie-breaker

Poland's Malwina Smarzek attacks the Argentina's blockers.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 28, 2013 – European powerhouses Poland continued their invincible run in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall after registering an epic 3-2 (25-23 23-25 24-26 25-14 15-12) victory over in-form Argentina in their Pool B clash on Sunday.

World No.6 Poland, which led Pool B with five points from two wins against no loss, opened up their explosive attacks right from the beginning of the first set, while Argentina, the surprising 3-0 winners over Asian champions Japan the previous match, counter-attacked well. The tussle ended in a thrilling hard-fought affair 25-23 in favour of Poland.

The second set became more thrilling when Argentina played cool in the hotly-contested battle. Sol Piccolo and Camila Hiruela Tapia emerged as smashing machines of Argentina as they uncorked a barrage of powerful attacks. However, Poland held their nerves to strike back bravely. It turned out to be a see-saw battle, but the final assault saw Argentina fare much better to win the close set 25-23.

The similar script was written in the third set when both sides played up to their par to come up with scintillating blocks and thundering cross-court spikes. Camila Hiruela Tapia whistled as a push-up signal to boost her team-mates’ spirit and it worked out pretty well. Whenever Argentina scored a point, she did that again and again. It was like the saying “Catch me if you can” and Argentina continued their brilliance to beat Poland in a tight contest 26-24.

Both teams gave it all-out in the fourth set, but the Argentina’s game was errors-filled. They also produced poor reception which caused them dear. Poland overwhelmed them for the comfortable 25-14 loss.
Holding a 2-2 equaliser, Argentina took the excellent offensive combination of Piccolo’s mighty attacks and solid blockings from Aldana Tibaldo and Yamile Michlig to take the commanding 9-6 lead.

Poland found their touch moments later to score straight six points to surge ahead Argentina 12-9 and continued their winning streak to lead 14-11. The Poles allowed their formidable rivals only one more point before a powerful jump serve from Argentine Camila Hiruela Tapia went wide. Poland captured the heart-pounding set 15-12 and the grueling encounter.
