World No.1 China succumb to straight two losses in Girls’ U18 Worlds

China and Poland fight for the ball over the net.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 27, 2013 – European giants Poland annihilated Asian powerhouses China in hard-fought four sets 25-21 25-21 21-25 26-24 in their second Pool B match in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Saturday.

Malwina Smarzek topscored 28 points for Poland, while Chinese Yuan Xinyu scored a match-high 19 points.

After a 2-3 letdown to Asian champions Japan in the previous match, China, world No.1 and silver medalists at the previous world meet in Turkey two years ago, played with more consistency in their tough encounter against Poland, the 3-2 winners over Greece. However, the Poles proved a tough nut to crack.

Led by the tall and towering Yuan Xinyue, 199cm, China failed to make their mark to come out with several unforced mistakes which cost them dear later on. China lost the first set 21-25. The situation remained unchanged in the second set. Poland carried out powerful attacks and solid block which foiled the China’s attempts. Poland wrapped up the set with the similar margin 25-21.

In the third set, Poland remained in awesome form. They raced to a 8-4 lead, thanks to thundering cross-court spikes by Malwina Smarzek. China asked for time-out to improve their game. Their more determination worked out pretty well when the Chinese roared back to close the gap 9-9. They continued mighty attacks to win the important set 25-21.

China badly needed the win in the next set to make another life in the decider. However, Poland did not allow them such a chance. After capturing the pole position 23-21, Poland temporarily dropped their rhythm. The Chinese seized the opportunity to come back on track. They attacked spectacularly to close the margin 24-24 before Poland tightened their defence to win two crucial points for the fourth-set win 26-24 and the match.
