Gallant Peru stun world No.3 Italy in thrilling tie-breaker

Peru players line up to thank their supporters at the Liptapanlop Hall after their 3-2 win over Italy.

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 27, 2013 – Die-hard Peru pulled off a stunning come-from-behind 3-2 (26-28 19-25 25-20 25-22 15-13) victory over hefty Italy in their second Pool D match in the Girls’ U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Saturday.

Angela Leyva scored a match-high 18 points for Peru in this encounter, while Anastasia Guerra led Italy with 25 points including 19 devastating attacks.

After losing 1-3 to defending champions Turkey in their opening  clash on Friday, Italy walked into the competing venue with their heads high in confidence as they learned their fortunes against smaller-made Peru would be much easier. But things turned sour for the Italians.

World No.3 Italy was strengthened by the three towers - the 193cm Anna Nicoletti, who led the team with 23 points in the previous match against Turkey, the 193cm Beatrice Berti and the 192cm Elisa Zanette, while Peru, ranked No.10 in the world, relied on the same line-up.

Peru, cheered on by the nerves-wracking horns blown repeatedly by their supporters, started strongly, with Rosa Vaaliente and Angela Leyva attacking the taller blockers with their devastating spikes to lead 6-1. Italy heightened their defence and hit back aggressively to draw 14-14 and again 19-19. From then on, both sides traded leads. Italy were in better form to take the close set 28-26.

Peru tried to make amends in the second set. Hard-hitting Angela Leyva attacked the taller blockers with her exceptional cross-court spikes. However, Italy were just too strong to end the rivals’ challenge in the set 25-19.

Peru came to life in the third and fourth sets. They regrouped and bounced back with splendid form to win 25-20 and 25-22 for a 2-2 tie.

The decider saw both sides play up to their standard. After a 6-6 equaliser, Peru upped their tempo and stormed on their gallant play. Both teams exchanged the leads, making it an exciting clash. Peru proved steadily to capture the set 15-13  and the exhausting match.
