Poland recover from two-set down to win hard-fought five-set thriller against Greece

Greece were unable to keep up their rhythm from the beginning of the match, eventually losing 3-2 to Poland in their first match of the Girls' U18 World Championship

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 26, 2013 – Gallant Poland cleared their first hurdle in their Pool B encounter against Greece by producing an exceptional come-from-behind 3-2 (20-25 26-28 25-20 28-26 15-10) victory over Greece in the Girls U18 World Championship at the Liptapanlop Hall on Friday.

Greece, ranked 33 in the world, attacked right from the opening whistle in the first set against world No.6 Poland. With the 196cm-tall Anthi Vasilantonaki penetrating Poland’s defence with her aggressive spikes and Alexandra Champilomati carrying out powerful jump spikes, Greece took a comfortable set 25-20.

Their confidence sky-high following this opening set win, Greece remained steady with their attacking rhythm in the second set, which allowed them to forge ahead of Poland. As Greece unleashed a series of devastating spikes to take a commanding 18-15 lead, Poland pulled their game together to narrow the gap 22-23. From then on, the battle became more thrilling, with Malwina Smarzek using her height advantage to attack effectively at the net. However, Greece with their never-say-die attitude, Greece came from behind to clinch the hotly-contested set with a score of 28-26.

Poland turned the tables on Greece in the third and fourth sets, maintaining their poise and gathering their courage to win 25-20 and 28-26. The decider saw Greece race to a 5-1 lead before Poland played with guts to win the crucial set 15-10 and the match.
