Russia used the power and size to beat Puerto Rico
The bigger Russians utilized their size advantage to get leads of 8-5 and 16-8 at the two technical time-outs with Anna Beskova providing good spikes and Anastasia Markova leading a high wall that stopped Puerto Rico. It was an easy first set for Russia.

Anna Arbuzova's kills gave Russia an 8-6 lead in the second set. Puerto Rico tied at 9-all with an ace from Barbara Flores and went ahead 11-10 lead behind a spike of Jessica Candelario, but Elena Irisova and Tatiana Alizarova delivered clutch points to give back the lead to Russia 16-14. From there on, the power of Russia was too much.

The Puerto Ricans capitalized several Russian mistakes to take the lead 8-4 and were in front 14-10 when Russia started a 6-1 rally sparked by a spike of Beskova for a 16-15 margin. Puerto Rico fabricated its own rally (10-6) with two aces apiece by Sarai Alvarez and Vanessa Velez and clutch blocking produced by Candelario.

The combination of spikes and blocks by Arbuzova and Soldatova sent Russia in front 8-5, but the fiery Puerto Ricans came back and tied at 13-all with Alvarez and Gabrielle Rivera as main suppliers. Russia led 16-14 driven by Beskova and went on to win despite the great effort of Alvarez and her teammates.
