Niterói, Brazil, August 9, 2011 – Egypt defeated Puerto Rico, 3-1 (17-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-21) and secured 15th place in the FIVB Volleyball Men´s Junior World Championship 2011 at Caio Martins gymnasium, on Tuesday afternoon.
Egypt finished with a final overall record of 2-6. Puerto Rico finished at 1-7.
Puerto Rico’s Steven Morales was the match’s leading scorer 24 points, all on attacks. On the Egyptian side, team captain Moustafa Idris scored 17 points on 14 attacks and three blocks. Egypt got a big help from their opponent, as they scored 33 points on Puerto Rico´s errors, while the Caribbean side only got 17 points from Egypt.
Egypt led in attacks (54-47) while Puerto Rico led in blocks (9-6) and service aces (6-3).
In the first set, Puerto Rico jumped out to a 6-1 lead and led 8-4 at the first technical timeout (TTO). It continued to lead 16-8 at the second TTO and rolled to the victory.
Egypt took a 6-2 lead in the second set, on a block and two attacks along with three Puerto Rico errors, and led 8-4 at the first TTO. It continued to lead 16-11 at the second TTO. Puerto Rico never rallied and Egypt went on to win the set 25-14.
Egypt led the third set at the first technical timeout 8-5, but Puerto Rico did not give up. With Egypt leading 11-9, Puerto Rico’s Noah Marrero scored with an attack and Morales followed with two straight spikes to give Puerto Rico a 12-11 lead. Josue Rivera had an ace to increase Puerto Rico’s lead to two. Puerto Rico led 16-13 at the second TTO. Egypt came back to tie the score at 19-19. It was still tied at 22-22 when Eslam Abou El Hassan scored with a left-side attack. Egypt reached set point first at 24-23 and Omar Hassan gave his team the win with an attack.
In the final set, Egypt took an 8-5 lead at the first TTO. With Egypt leading 12-8, Puerto Rico scored four straight points to tie the score at 12-12. The score was still tied at 14-14 when Egypt scored five straight points to lead 19-14. Puerto Rico came back to score three points to pull within two at 19-17. But Egypt managed to hold off the rally and won the set and the match.
