Lima, Peru, July 26, 2011 – The FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship Peru 2011 second round reaches the mid-point on Wednesday with eight matches spread out over two pools in Lima and Trujillo, Peru.

The second round features four groups of four teams playing round-robin contests July 26 through July 28. The top eight teams are divided into two groups – Pool E and Pool F – and are in the hunt for the gold medal. The top two teams in Pools E and F advance to the semifinal round. Meanwhile, the bottom eight teams continue to play second round matches for places 9-16 in Pools G and H.

China versus Belgium
China (1-0 and 3 points in Pool F/4-0 overall) and Belgium (0-1 and 0 points in Pool 4/2-2 overall) return to the court Wednesday at 18.15 in Trujillo in a key battle for both teams. A China win would place them in the driver’s seat to reach the top semifinal of the tournament, while a Belgium loss would push them potentially out of the medal race. China started the second round with a four-set win over Slovakia, while Belgium lost in straight sets to Brazil on Tuesday.

Brazil versus Slovakia
Brazil (1-0 and 3 points in Pool F/4-0 overall) and Slovakia (0-1 and 0 points in Pool F/2-2 overall) play each other at 20.15 on Wednesday in Trujillo with different agendas. Brazil would like none other than to start Pool F with a 2-0 record heading into the final day, while Slovakia does not want to fall to 0-2. Brazil opened pool play with a three-set win over Belgium, while Slovakia pushed China to four sets before losing.

United States versus Italy
United States (1-0 and 3 points in Pool E/4-0 overall) takes on Italy (1-0 and 3 points in Pool E/3-1 overall) at 18.15 on Wednesday in Lima. Both teams seek a second straight victory to open Pool E as the Americans held Dominican Republic to 49 points scored a three-set sweep, while Italy dealt host Peru a three-set loss on Tuesday. The United States are undefeated in the tournament, while Italy has won their last three matches after an opening loss to Brazil.

Peru versus Dominican Republic
Both Peru (0-1 and 0 points in Pool E/3-1 overall) and Dominican Republic (0-1 and 0 points in Pool E/2-2), which play on Wednesday at 20.15 in Lima, are in desperate need of a win after second round opening losses on Tuesday. Peru lost to Italy in straight sets, while Dominican Republic was handed the same fate by the United States.

Japan versus Korea
Japan (1-0 and 3 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) and Korea (0-1 and 0 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) square off on Wednesday at 9.30 in Lima. Japan captured their first win of the 2011 tournament with a sweep of Tunisia, while Korea lost a four-set match to Cuba in the second-round opener.

Cuba versus Tunisia
Cuba (1-0 and 3 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) and Tunisia (0-1 and 0 points in Pool G/1-3 overall) challenge each other on Wednesday at 11.30 in Lima. Cuba will look to win their second straight match of the tournament following a four-set win over Korea. Tunisia lost to a three-set match to Cuba to open the second round.

Russia versus Poland
Russia (1-0 and points in Pool H, 2-2 overall) will face Poland (1-0 and 2 points in Pool H, 1-3 overall) on Wednesday at 9.30 in the morning in Trujillo. Both teams picked up wins to start Pool H with Russia gaining three points for a three-set win over Egypt and Poland two points for a five-set win over Serbia. The winner will have the upper hand as the top seed in Pool H going into the final day of the pool.

Serbia versus Egypt
Both Serbia (0-1 and 1 point in Pool H/1-3 overall) and Egypt (0-1 and 0 points in Pool H/0-4 overall) will meet on the court at 11.30 Wednesday morning in Trujillo. Both teams are seeking their first win Pool H after losing matches to start the second round. After losing the first two sets to Poland, Serbia forced a deciding tiebreak set before losing. Egypt lost to Russia to start the second round and are in search of their first-ever win in the FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship history.
