Trujillo, Peru, July 28, 2011—Brazil, ranked number one in the FIVB Junior and Youth World Rankings, defeated China 3-0 (29-27, 25-19, 25-20) in a Pool F matchup on the final day of the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship in Peru 2011.
The win, which gave Brazil its ninth point in the second round, secured first place in Pool F. China, with six points in the second round, settled for second place in Pool F.
China’s Zhou Yang, the third leading scorer in the tournament, had nine points. Brazil’s Gabriela Souza, the fourth leading scorer, finished with 10 points. Brazil scored nine points from blocks, compared to six for China.

An enthusiastic crowd packed into Gran Chimu Hall, with the fans split fairly evenly between the two teams. The two talented squads frequently traded leads in the thrilling opening set, until Brazil’s Samara Almeida finally delivered the winning kill, her sixth point of the set. Priscila Heldes converted all eight of her dig attempts for Brazil.
Continuing the momentum from the previous set, Brazil scored the first five points in the second set, and built leads as large as seven points. Sthefanie Paulino and Gabriela Souza led Brazil with five points in the set. Priscila Heldes set the ball well for Brazil.
With the Pool F title within their grasp, Brazil was motivated in the third set, and played great team defense. Long Cheng replaced Di Yao as the setter for China. In the match, seven different players scored at least one point off of serves for Brazil.
All teams will have an hour-and-a-half to train on July 29, and will return to competition on July 30 in Lima.
