Trujillo, Peru, July 24, 2011—Tunisia defeated their continental rival in a thrilling five-set match 3-2 (26-24, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 17-15) in a Pool A matchup of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship in Peru 2011.
The first set was a hard-fought battle, with both countries desperately seeking their first match win. Many of the action was unfortunately faults, with both squads committing 12 opponent errors. Tunisia’s Dridi Feriel served an ace to win the opening set, their first win in a set after being swept by Slovakia and Peru. Fara Ahmed led Egypt with four points, while Maroua Boughanmi led Tunisia with four points.
Tunisia jumped out to a quick lead in the second set, winning nine of the first 10 points, as Maroua Boughanmi served two aces for Tunisia. Egypt responded and tied the set at 15, as Laila Mahfouz set the ball well for Egypt. However, Tunisia held on for the victory, behind the seven points of Ghalia Ouderni. The action was much cleaner, with Tunisia benefiting from four opponent errors, and Egypt from five opponent errors.
Egypt set the tone in the third set, and led by as many as five points. Yasmin Hussein secured the win with a powerful kill, her eight point of the set. Egypt’s solid defense carried them to victory.
The momentum carried into the fourth set for Egypt, as they quickly established an eight-point lead. Tunisia struggled to return the saves from Egypt, with Egypt collecting 14 points off serves through the first four sets. For the second consecutive set, Yasmin Hussein clinched the win for Egypt with a powerful kill.
Determined after losing the two previous sets, Tunisia scored the first four points of the fifth set. However, Egypt battled back and tied the score at four. The final set remained very close, and Tunisia displayed heart by persevering after facing adversity the two previous sets.
Tunisia secured nine points off blocks, compared to eight for Egypt.
In qualifying, Tunisia finished first in Africa, and Egypt second.
Slovakia and Peru will advance from Pool A. Tunisia and Egypt will remain in Trujillo.
